Art @ SLE

The arts are a response to our individuality and our nature, and help to shape our identity. Art has the potential to unify. It can speak in many languages without a translator. The arts do not discriminate. The arts lift us up.

Intent

At Shortlanesend School, we view Art and Design as an important part of  a broad and balanced curriculum of learning. We strive to encourage all children to produce creative and  imaginative work, with no fear of failure.

Our children have constant opportunities through our immersive curriculum to explore their ideas and record their experiences, as well as exploring the work of others and evaluate different creative ideas.

Our children are inspired to become more confident and proficient in a variety of techniques including drawing, painting, sculpting, collage, printing.  They will also develop their knowledge of famous artists, architects and designers.

We strive to ensure all our children will develop a life long love and curiosity about art and design through a series of sequential lessons offering skills and knowledge progression whilst providing them with the opportunity to ask questions and demonstrate their skills in a variety of ways.

This mirrors our ethos at SLE of:

Smile - Learn - Excel

Implementation

We ensure high standards of teaching and learning in art and design at Shortlanesend by implementing a curriculum that is progressive in knowledge and skills throughout the whole school.

Art and design is taught as part of a termly topic, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum. Teachers plan lessons for their class using our progression of knowledge and skills document. This document ensures the curriculum is covered and the skills/knowledge taught is progressive from year group to year group.

We place emphasis on knowledge ensuring that children understand the context of the artwork, as well as the artists, architects and designers that they are learning about. Our immersive curriculum allows links to other curriculum areas, including humanities, with children developing a considerable knowledge of individual artists as well as individual works and art movements.

A similar focus on skills means that children are given opportunities to express their creative imagination, as well as practice and develop mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing, collage and sculpture. Children’s knowledge and skills are built upon over a sequence of lessons which lead to a final piece. This encourages a mantra of knowing more, remembering more and understanding more.
